Even Decriminalization Sponsors Acknowledged the Unacceptable
“disorder, crime and human suffering on Portland Streets”
before Oregon legislature restored guardrails around drug policy in 2024.
The 2024 legislature Joint Addiction and Community Safety Response Committee had 10 members, 3 Republicans and 7 Democrats. The Oregonian’s Noelle Crombie reported all of the Democratic committee members received political donations from the Drug Policy Alliance, the organization behind the original law. DPA, based in New York, also had a dedicated in-state lobbyist and several activist groups participating with Oregon legislators.
Regular Oregonians were given ONE opportunity to vote on drug decriminalization, when Measure 110 was on our ballot in November 2020. Subsequent congressional modifications were done in consultation with pro-decriminalization lobbyists, partners and legislative allies.
